Styling Preparation

For Kate’s make-over I firstly styled her hair to make it look more elegant. As she only feels comfortable with it up in a ponytail, I had no choice but to work with that. Therefore I simply added some volume and clipped it tight on the sides to accentuate her face shape. This already showed a great improvement. I have also added make-up in neutral colours to accentuate green eyes and that would go with any outfit, day or night.

Things I had to consider before styling Kate:

Colours: I chose bright colours that would show good contrast with each other when put together as an outfit. Kate tends to wear quite dull colours that make her look paler, I wanted to brighten her up to make her dark hair stand out and make her skin glow.

Style: I wanted to make Kate more funky, as I felt she wears clothes that make her appear older and less vibrant. Adding some funky clothes will make her look younger and more fashion conscious.

Body shape: As Kate is very petit and slim I wanted to draw attention away from that by putting her in clothes that make a statement taking the attention away for her shape and size. Her clothes before where very plain and shapeless, this did not accentuate any of her good assets. Firstly I wanted to find a good trouser fit, tops with patterns or detail across the bust area to broaden a small chest. I also dressed her in heels to give her more height. As her body is in proportion she can wear any balance of clothes.

I also had to consider what she would feel comfortable in and is likely to wear. This meant I had to choose outfits that where not too daring and creative. Something safe but fashionable.

Outfit One

Casual Daytime

For the first outfit I wanted to try something Kate wouldn’t normally choose. I dressed her more casual than she would normally dress. Firstly I looked for a pair of jeans from River Island as I knew she finds a good fit of trousers from this shop. I found a pair of worn denim jeans with small tears and bleached. This showed Kate how to try something with a more interesting texture than just plain jeans. The jeans where a size 6 and where a perfect fit. They were in a straight leg style, to lengthen her legs, to make her appear taller. I added black leather boots to add even more height.

I then chose a bright coral coloured t-shirt that went really well with the jeans as the top was also textured with funky details. The top has a text print across the bust area that made her bust appear bigger, with a medium neckline again to make bust appear larger. The colour suited Kate well as it made her look less pale and accentuated her dark features. I wanted the top to be a loose fit as the jeans where tight fitted, to balance the outfit. Also the length of the top sitting just on the widest part of the hips made them appear wider giving her a more curvaceous shape.
To add a contrast with the bright t-shirt I added a black leather jacket to make to top stand out and to tie in with the black leather boots. The jacket went really well with the outfit making it an autumn/winter casual and funky alternative for Kate to try. The texture details in the outfit drew attention away from her shape, and accentuated her best features; her legs and slim fame.

Outfit Two

Evening

For the second outfit I wanted to make Kate look glamorous for an evening occasion. Normally Kate wears dresses so I wanted to show her a different possibility, dressing her in something more adventurous. I chose to stick with the colours black, white and silver to give a big contrast between each garment. Also having a basic colour pallet meant the outfit could be based on glitz and glam and accessories. I wanted Kate to feel comfortable in this outfit so it is important to keep it simple and not to have too much variety all at once. I added some accesories to dress up the outfit, adding some black and silver bangles, some big black sequined earings and a diemante belt.

I firstly chose a white low cut top with a sequined detail on the bust area. I chose white to make her look lass pale and to make her dark features stand out. I then added a sparkly sequined waist coat that went really well with the sequined detail on the top. The waist coat was loosely fitted hanging to the point of her waist. This is to conceal her straight shape and to give the impression of having a shapely waist underneath. The top stopped at the broadest part of the hips to make her hips appear wider. I also added a silver sparkly diamante belt to focus on this area and to sit below the waist coat. I dressed Kate in leggings to show off her best asset; her legs, along with some platform black studded shoes to give her lots of height. Again this outfit is not something Kate would normally wear but it suggested a glamorous but not too outrageous alternative to wearing dresses out of an evening.

Outfit Three

Smart daytime/ casual evening

For the final outfit I styled Kate in something smarter to wear in the day as she likes to look smart for work. I suggested a block colour of royal blue and black. This again kept things simple but showed a lot of colour. I chose a knitted blue jumper that had a high neck line to make bust area appear bigger. The fit and length was perfect as the bottom of the top sat on the broadest part of the hips to make them appear wider. I then added a thick black belt to narrow the waist. The bulkiness of the jumper made her appear more curvaceous with a pulled in waist. This was a good way of concealing a boyish figure and making it appear more womanly. I dressed Kate in black leggings again to keep the colour pallet simple and to show of her best feature, her legs.

The black belt and the leggings tied in together and contrasted with the blue. I added blue and black bangles and black earrings to dress up the outfit, showing Kate how to accessories but keeping things simple, making it more appealing and confident to wear. I also added a matching blue jacket form New Look. This jacket when done up was very shapely with a waist band pulling in the puffed out area on the hips. The bulky collar filled out the bust area giving the impression of an hourglass shape. The blue jumper and legging where found in Topshop both in size 8. They were both a good fit. The jacket size 8 from New look was slightly big as they did not offer a size 6 range, but it fitted well over the thick jumper she wore underneath.
